My studio approach to figure photography is understated, especially for a model's first session. I use simple lighting setups, plain backgrounds, and few props. We will work with three types of poses: standing; sitting on a stool, pedestal, platform, or the floor; and reclining on the floor or a platform. The studio is heated when necessary. A typical session takes about two hours.

The following are suggestions to women or men, as applicable, for preparing for a figure photo session.

Clothing

Marks from elastic, tight clothing, and underwear are a major concern. Even those from waistbands and socks can remain visible for several hours. I suggest wearing only a sweat suit with broad, smooth elastic bands, or possibly a shift or other light dress, before and to the session. You may want to bring slippers and a robe to wear during setup changes.

Hair

Wear your hair as you wish. For some poses I may ask you to pull your hair back or up with clips or your hands to bare your neck. Do whatever you do with your body hair a day or two before the session to minimize any skin irritation.

Makeup

Only lightly apply makeup, if any, to avoid strong contrast between your face and body coloring.

Nails

I suggest either no nail color or a light color for both feet and hands. Also, high gloss can make distracting highlights in the photographs.

Jewelry

Again, very little or none, although dangling earrings often work very well with a bare neck. If you want to wear items that have particular meaning for you, please do so.

Tan Lines

I can subdue some lines with pose, filters, and lighting but you may want to consider using foundation or body makeup to soften really sharp lines.
