My photographs range from portraiture to abstract images and throughout that range I enjoy expressing contrasts between subject and surroundings. Using only light and shadow with black and white photography I try to generate a visual appreciation of the body's surface and underlying structure and perhaps to evoke images of tactile responses as well.
My experience in photography includes scientific, landscape, portraiture, and most recently, figure photography. I began working in figure photography several years ago as a reference tool for stone sculpting, to relieve the model of having to pose for long periods under the conditions of a stone carving studio. This photography has now become an additional means of artistic expression for me.
Models and clients for figure photography have included women and men of varying body types and ages ranging from twenty-five to sixty-five. Clients' reasons for posing have included: gifts for friends, partners, or spouses; figure studies of themselves for self portraits in other media; documentation of their body shape at specific times in their lives. For many posing nude is a concept of self expression they have nurtured for years and for which I offer a safe and confidential venue. The photo session becomes a conversation between us, a collaborative effort, and many have returned for additional sessions. My goal is to make the session enjoyable and to produce images that please the client.
I work with ordinary people, ordinary in that none are professional models, but perhaps extraordinary in their interest and their courage in seeing their own body through other eyes and from other perspectives.
